The impact of perceived Parental acceptance on Implicit Self-Esteem in the LGBTQIA+ population and the relationship with alcohol use.

You are invited to participate in a research project investigating whether parental acceptance impacts Implicit Self-Esteem in the LGBTQIA+ population and if high alcohol consumption is a coping strategy for low Implicit Self-Esteem.

Research found a strong correlation between self-esteem development and parenting acceptance of their children’s sexual orientation (Katz-Wise, 2016), with less accepting parents contributing negatively to their child’s development of self-esteem. Furthermore, compared to heterosexual individuals, sexual minorities showed to be more affected by unhealthy self-esteem, due to discrimination (Dermody et al., 2014). Additionally, low levels of self-esteem have been linked to increased alcohol consumption (Lauren et al., 2017; Zhai et al., 2015).

If you are 18+, part of the LGBTQIA+ community and an alcohol consumer, I would very much appreciate it if you would spare 20 minutes to take part in my project: https://research.sc/participant/login/dynamic/26102FCC-5DD8-49A6-87DC-8334530FCB04

You will fill out online questionnaires which will ask you about your perceived parental acceptance, drinking habits, and drinking motives. A task will assess your Implicit Self-Esteem through the Implicit Association Test. The experiment can only be run on mobile phones or tablets.

Please, feel free to share this post and do not hesitate to contact me for any additional information at: [email protected]

How do we process information? Investigating the role of elementary discourse units in language processing and recall.

I am currently recruiting participants for my dissertation project about how language influences how we process information. There are two different experiments – completely independent of each other, although there are some similarities between them. If you’re interested, here are the links:

This project will investigate the influence of drawing on human episodic memory (i.e., memory for single events). Previous literature has demonstrated that drawing can significantly enhance memory for to-be-remembered information compared to writing. However, the exact mechanisms that result in this benefit remain unclear. Broadly, the tasks will involve presenting auditory words at encoding while participants view encoding instructions on the screen (i.e., draw or write). The retrieval task simply asks participants to recall as many words as they can remember. The experiment will take place on the University of Glasgow’s Psychology online experimental system: Experimentum. We will be carrying out the experiment with a maximum of 50 participants for the project.
Participants will be randomly assigned to conditions and coded to a random ID to maintain anonymity. This is the link of the experiment: Drawing and episodic memory study link

I am part of a research team investigating the effect of disgust sensitivity on mental health attitudes and resulting stigma towards people with mental health conditions. Our theoretical framework is based on the evolutionary perspective of disgust having emerged as a form of disease-avoidance-mechanism, specifically regarding pathogens. We hypothesise that in some individuals this response may be overly sensitive, thus translating to an avoidance response towards wider ranging diseases that do not actually pose a risk of infection, such as mental health conditions. We expect that this in turn may be related to the avoidance of individuals with mental health conditions (depression and bullimia nervosa, respectively) manifesting as increased stigmatising attitudes towards them. Investigating the individual and combined effects of social media content consumption and Covid-19 risk factors on the mental health of students and recent graduates.

As much of the early research into Covid-19’s impact on mental health concerns healthcare professionals, current students (undergraduate / postgraduates) and recent graduates (of the years 2019/2020) can shed light on the impact of specific Covid-19 risk factors on the mental health of young adults navigating higher education and entering the workforce. Given that social media has been instrumental in keeping us connected, supported, and informed throughout the pandemic, this study will ask about your social media content consumption habits and preferences, as well as your recent mental health and pandemic-specific concerns. Using this information, this study seeks to investigate whether social media content consumption plays a role in the relationship between Covid-19 risk factors and mental health.

The study consists of a series of short questionnaires in an online survey format, which should take no more than 20-25 minutes. There is a prize draw for 10, £15 vouchers if you wish to enter.

The Survey Link (which includes a more detailed Participant Information Sheet) is found below:

The distribution of digital shared decision-making aids

When decisions are being made about a patient’s treatment there are 2 experts involved:

  1. The health professional who is an expert in the condition.
  2. The patient who is an expert in themselves e.g. how they are experiencing the condition, how they feel about possible side effects etc.

Shared decision making takes place when both experts share information and preferences with each other, have a discussion and come to a mutual decision about what to do next.  To help with shared decision-making tools known as shared decision-making aids can be used before, during, and even after the appointment by health professionals and patients.  It is recommended that when a digital aid is developed how the aid will be provided to patients should also be established.  Unfortunately, this often does not happen and when it does there is little evidence of the potential users being asked how they would like to be given the aid.

This study is open to everyone currently living in Scotland and is comprised of an online survey which asks how you would like to be provided with a digital shared decision-making aid before, during (in person and remote) and after an appointment.  The survey can be completed on all devices including smartphone and should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.

Aphantasia and Episodic Memory

We invite you to take part in a series of experiments to investigate the potential effects of aphantasia on episodic memory, as part of MSc dissertation projects. There are 4 experiments, each which will investigate a different aspect of episodic memory. Each experiment will last around 15 minutes.

Episodic memory is the ability to recall past events in our life, and research suggests that when we do this we almost reimagine the event in our heads. However, we often assume that everyone has the same ability to consciously access mental imagery. We now know from aphantasia research that this ability to mentally image past events is variable, and this has significant consequences for theories of memory. Therefore, it is our hope that by studying aphantasic participants’ episodic memory performance that we can begin to understand how memory may operate when we do not have the capacity to mentally visualise images or past events.

We are therefore seeking aphantasic participants and healthy controls and would really appreciate if you could follow the link below to get involved. Must be between ages of 18 and 35, and not be taking antidepressants.

Predicting Burnout

We invite you to take part in a study investigating how perfectionism is influenced by resilience in predicting burnout and whether these effects vary by culture.

Evidence shows perfectionism increases, and resilience reduces, the likelihood of burnout. We have found no studies which investigate how these factors interact, or any cross cultural differences in their effects. Our study is therefore unique in investigating whether resilience counteracts any harmful aspects of perfectionism which predict higher burnout. As burnout also involves a reduction in group belonging we are also investigating whether cultures that prioritise group harmony present burnout differently.

We are interested in responses from anyone studying or working full time and particularly across east and western cultures. Surveys are available in English and simplified Chinese from the link below. The study consists of a demographic questions but responses are entirely anonymous and should take 20 minutes maximum.
